Friendly Visitors
PeopleCare, Inc. began some ten years ago by providing a volunteer friendly visitation program to the homebound, which often provided respite to a primary caregiver. Today, the Friendly Visitors program is still one of the mainstays of PeopleCare and continues to grow as the need to serve is identified. Our focus, as always, is to provide, possibly, the only link these people have to the larger caring community…to bring the outside world in.
Information and Referral Program
As our client list grew, it was natural that PeopleCare began receiving calls requesting a wide range of services already available in the community. PeopleCare developed and has continued to update a library of agencies and services in our community to make referral complete and timely. Each referral by our staff receives the attention it deserves, including an all important follow-up with both the person being referred and the referred agency to make sure the needs of each are being met in a satisfactory manner.
PeopleCare Plus
In addition to the homebound, there are a growing number of people in retirement and nursing homes with no family or friends to care. PeopleCare does. PeopleCare Plus volunteers began visiting these forgotten people, being sure to let them know someone does care. Our staff has begun sending greeting cards to Plus and Friendly Visitors clients on Holidays and special occasions.
Shepherds Volunteer Transportation Program
Over and over, the overwhelming need for transportation showed its face.
PeopleCare created Shepherds to provide special transportation for those
who need just a little extra help…maybe a hand getting ready for the trip,
a strong arm to hold while going up or down stairs, help into and out
of a vehicle, or some moral support getting to the doctors office at their
destination.
Rider Program
As a natural compliment to the Shepherds transportation program, PeopleCare added the Rider Voucher taxi cab program. The program is designed for those seniors who no longer drive, but are still strong enough to get along by themselves at their destination. Each rider registers and purchases a $10 value voucher booklet at $5 each. Riders use the vouchers to pay for their rides, thus receiving a 50% discount. PeopleCare subsidizes the remaining amount.
Powerful Tools for Caregivers
Powerful Tools is the newest program, designed to train caregivers to better take care of themselves and reduce the stress experienced as caregivers. The program is run in conjunction with Mather LifeWays and Community Memorial Foundation, who provided training and funding for its initial stages. We are continuing to offer the program to our volunteers, clients and other caregivers in need. One can see, our quality of life mission is central to all of our programs.
